Like there is a genuine good game in there that doesn’t even have the amount of limited budget that Nagoshi had to work with on the original Yakuza for the PS2. Deadly Premonition has the complex routines of its NPCs, who go about their lives as you explore the city, stores have distinct opening and closing times, York’s beard grows as time progresses as well as his hygiene, some of the side missions gives some interesting back story to some of the prominent characters in the story. It’s why in Yakuza 0, for instance you will sometimes have cutscenes with less animations that function more like slightly animated slideshows which you could also argue as a stylistic choice, and sometimes you’ll have cutscenes that play like old school PS2 JRPgs with no voice acting but textboxes.īut at the same time you have a carefully crafted cities with a lot of well designed mini games, and distractions, a decent combat system that gets better with every entry, a genuine virtual tour of modern Japan. Deadly Premonition, much like the early Yakuza titles and even the more recent ones, clearly are made by passionate people with good ideas and knows exactly what they wanna do and where to prioritize their limited budget.
